Question:

What is variance?

Answer:

In statistics, variance is the square of the standard deviation. In ship motions, variance represents the area under the response spectrum and is used to compute responses in irregular waves. For example, the RMS amplitude of a certain response is simply the square-root of the variance of that response (which is mathematically equivalent to the standard deviation of the response).

In wave statistics, the variance is representative of the total energy in the seaway.

SEA always displays includes the variance in the response statistics tables. Variance data may also be written to a text file using the /DATA:VA parameter.
