Question:

How fast is too fast? (when setting the SPEED parameter)

Answer:

The forward speed corrections used by SEA become less accurate at higher speeds. However, there is no limit to the speed that can be set when using the SEA command, but when the vessel begins to leave the displacement regime (Fr>=0.4) certain lift forces and hydrodynamic behavior will not be captured.

One way to extend the validity of the forward speed theory is to define the waterplane such that it matches the vessel's steady-state mean running condition (i.e. mean running trim and depth). This technique has been shown to improve the accuracy of the predicted radiation forces and extend the validity of the theory at least up to Fr~0.6.
