Question:

What is the difference between the General, Narrow-band, and ITTC Bretschneider forms?

Answer:

The WAVE command offers three forms of the Bretschneider spectrum: General, Narrow-band, and ITTC1978.

The General and Narrow-band forms differ only in the broadness of the spectrum. The Narrow-band spectrum has a spectral broadness parameter (sometimes denoted as epsilon in the literature) of 0. The Narrow-band form has been found to match the form used by SMP. The General form has a spectral broadness parameter of 1.

The ITTC1978 form modifies the coefficients in the spectrum formula to match the recommendations of the ITTC for a Bretschneider spectrum when little or no information is known about the operating environment.
